Bird walk at Fishing Lake, Asika, Odisha

About Fishing Lake

Nestled near the town of Asika in Odisha’s Ganjam district, Fishing Lake, Asika is a tranquil freshwater wetland that quietly supports a remarkable web of life. Spread across a mosaic of open water, reed beds, marshy edges, and surrounding agricultural fields, the lake serves as both a livelihood source for local fishing communities and a seasonal refuge for wildlife. The habitat transitions from shallow aquatic zones rich in emergent vegetation to grassy bunds and scattered native trees, creating a dynamic interface between water and land. During monsoon and winter, fluctuating water levels further enhance its ecological diversity. The lake is especially rewarding for birding. Resident species such as herons, egrets, kingfishers, and cormorants are commonly seen along the shoreline, while jacanas and moorhens navigate floating vegetation. In winter, migratory ducks, waders, and occasional raptors arrive, turning the wetland into a vibrant birding hotspot
The surrounding fields attract pipits, wagtails, bee-eaters, and shrikes, while the skies above may host kites and harriers. Beyond birds, the lake supports fish, amphibians, reptiles, and a rich array of aquatic invertebrates, all playing crucial roles in maintaining the wetland’s ecological balance. However, Fishing Lake faces growing challenges. Increasing human disturbance, overfishing, agricultural runoff, plastic pollution, and wetland encroachment threaten its fragile ecosystem. Seasonal water extraction and habitat alteration further impact its ability to support migratory birds. Protecting this wetland requires community participation, sustainable fishing practices, and greater awareness of its ecological value. Fishing Lake, Asika stands as a reminder that even modest rural wetlands can hold immense biodiversity significance, offering both livelihoods and life in equal measure.
