Bird Walk at NDA Hill, Pune, Maharashtra

About NDA Hill

Perched on the green fringes of Pune, NDA Hill is a quiet haven where grasslands melt into scrub forests and seasonal streams cut through rocky slopes. Part of the larger ecosystem surrounding the National Defence Academy campus, this landscape supports a rich mosaic of habitats—from open plateaus dotted with hardy shrubs to tree-lined patches that come alive during the monsoon. Native flora like acacias, neem, and wild grasses create the perfect stage for an equally vibrant fauna. For birders, NDA Hill is a delight: early mornings echo with the calls of larks, shrikes, and warblers, while raptors soar effortlessly on rising thermals. It’s the kind of place where every turn of the trail offers a new sighting, making it ideal for both beginners and seasoned birdwatchers.
Yet, beneath its calm exterior, NDA Hill faces growing pressures. Rapid urban expansion around Pune, habitat degradation, and disturbance from unregulated human activity threaten its delicate balance. Grassland ecosystems, often overlooked in conservation, are especially vulnerable here, impacting ground-nesting birds and other wildlife. Preserving NDA Hill isn’t just about protecting a birding hotspot—it’s about safeguarding a unique and underappreciated habitat. Responsible birding, awareness, and community-led conservation efforts can ensure that this landscape continues to inspire and sustain life for years to come.

Common birds of NDA Hill

A morning at NDA Hill reveals just how diverse this seemingly rugged landscape can be. From the familiar flocks of Rock Pigeons lining electric wires to the sudden flash of doves lifting off the trail, there’s constant movement all around. Near water edges, a lone Common Sandpiper quietly forages, while overhead, the real drama unfolds—majestic raptors like the Bonelli’s Eagle and Eurasian Kestrel glide and hover, commanding the sky. The hill’s open scrub and grassland patches come alive with the chatter of Asian Green Bee-eaters, the metallic calls of Coppersmith Barbets, and the sharp notes of White-throated Kingfishers, creating a rich soundscape that defines birding here.
As you move through teak patches and scrubby trails, smaller yet equally captivating species begin to emerge. Fantails flit restlessly through branches, prinias and tailorbirds call from dense undergrowth, and shrikes perch watchfully in the open. Bulbuls, robins, and sunbirds add bursts of color, while swallows and martins sweep across the sky in graceful arcs. Every sighting—whether it’s a distant unidentified raptor or a vividly colored parakeet—adds to the layered experience of birding at NDA Hill, making it a rewarding destination for anyone looking to connect with nature.
