Bird Walk at Ramadevara Betta Sanctuary, Voderahalli, Karnataka

About Ramadevara Betta Sanctuary

Nestled amidst the dramatic granite hills of Voderahalli in Karnataka’s Ramanagara district, Ramadevara Betta Vulture Sanctuary is India’s first and only sanctuary dedicated exclusively to vulture conservation. Covering about 3.46 km², the sanctuary protects a unique mosaic of rocky cliffs, dry deciduous woodland, thorn scrub, and open grassland habitats that provide ideal nesting and roosting sites for raptors. The landscape supports a rich diversity of native flora, including Anogeissus, Terminalia, sandalwood, amla, and other dry forest species, while its fauna ranges from leopards, sloth bears, jackals, and porcupines to numerous reptiles, butterflies, and birds.
For birdwatchers, Ramadevara Betta is one of southern India’s most rewarding destinations, offering the chance to observe the critically endangered Long-billed Vulture alongside Egyptian and White-backed Vultures soaring above the cliffs. These magnificent scavengers play a vital ecological role by disposing of animal carcasses and helping maintain healthy ecosystems. The sanctuary has become a symbol of hope for vulture recovery in India, with recent breeding successes highlighting the importance of focused conservation efforts. Yet challenges remain, including habitat disturbance from increasing tourism and recreational activities, urban expansion, quarrying pressures, and the lingering impacts of toxic veterinary drugs such as diclofenac that devastated vulture populations across the country. Continued habitat protection, monitoring, and community-supported conservation are essential to ensure that this remarkable refuge remains a stronghold for vultures and a premier birding hotspot for generations to come.
