Bird Walk at Suraj Nagar Backwaters, Bhopal, MP

About Suraj Nagar Backwaters

Suraj Nagar’s backwaters form part of the Bhoj Wetland system — the vast aquatic heart of Bhopal’s Upper Lake (Bhojtal) — creating one of the city’s quieter but ecologically rich water habitats where many birders and nature lovers love to wander. The Upper Lake, with a water spread of about 31 km², is a historic reservoir built over a thousand years ago and now a Ramsar-designated wetland that supports a mosaic of open water, shallow backwaters, reed fringes and fringe woodlands right up to the suburbs of Suraj Nagar. These backwaters, fed by the lake’s ebbs and flows, nurture aquatic plants, algae and marginal vegetation, and provide feeding and resting grounds for waterbirds, insects, fish and amphibians, making this urban interface a surprisingly vibrant nature spot.
Birdwatchers and casual visitors alike can enjoy glimpses of ducks, egrets, herons and other waterbirds across seasons, as well as resident urban species that flit among the trees and along the shoreline. Yet despite its proximity to Bhopal’s human settlements, the Suraj Nagar backwater area — like much of the Bhoj Wetland Ramsar site — faces growing environmental pressures. Encroachments, construction, and illegal landfilling close to the water’s edge have been flagged by environmental groups and legal petitions as threats to the wetland’s ecological balance, while deteriorating water quality from urban runoff and sewage further stresses wildlife and habitat health. Conservation here is about balancing urban life and wetland protection, encouraging sustainable land use, community stewardship, and stronger enforcement of wetland protection regulations so that these peaceful backwaters remain a thriving greenspace in Bhopal’s “City of Lakes.”

Common birds of Suraj Nagar Backwaters

Suraj Nagar Backwaters in Bhopal offer a lively birding experience where open water, reed beds, and scrubby edges come together in perfect harmony. Winter mornings often reveal the graceful glide of a Marsh Harrier over the wetlands, while Little Egrets, Cattle Egrets, Little Cormorants, and Great Cormorants line the shallows. The floating vegetation hosts elegant Bronze-winged Jacanas and Pheasant-tailed Jacanas, while Spot-billed Ducks, Common Coots, Little Grebes, and winter visitors like the Red-crested Pochard dot the water’s surface. The calls of the Red-wattled Lapwing and the distant, resonant voice of the Sarus Crane add drama to the soundscape. Along the banks, birders can spot White-browed Wagtails, Grey Wagtails, the striking winter Bluethroat, and lively species such as Green Bee-eaters, Black Drongos, Pied Bushchats, and Indian Robins. Shrubs and trees shelter Greenish Warblers, Jungle Babblers, Magpie Robins, and the melodic notes of the Coppersmith Barbet, while White-throated Kingfishers, River Terns, and Little Terns bring flashes of color over the water. Even common residents like Laughing Doves, Spotted Doves, and House Sparrows contribute to the charm, making Suraj Nagar Backwaters a surprisingly rich and rewarding urban birding haven.
