SUMMARY:Bird Walk at Patrog\, Himachal Pradesh
DESCRIPTION:Bird Walk at Meyyur Lake area in Nemam\, Thiruvallur \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Thiruvallur\n \n \n \n \n 26 October\, 2025\n \n \n \n \n Karthik Varun\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About Meyyur Lake \n \n \n \n Meyyur Lake\, located near Nemam in Thiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu\, is a large freshwater wetland spread across roughly 150–200 hectares\, depending on seasonal inflow. The lake is fed by monsoon rains and local catchment streams\, forming a shallow basin with extensive reed beds\, mudflats\, and open water zones. Surrounding areas include paddy fields\, grazing lands\, and small patches of scrub vegetation\, together creating a mosaic of habitats ideal for both resident and migratory birds. Common birds visiting the lake are Spot-billed Pelican\, Painted Stork\, Asian Openbill\, Purple Heron\, Pheasant-tailed Jacana\, Black-winged Stilt\, Little Cormorant\, Common Coot\, Whiskered Tern\, and Garganey during the winter months. Smaller passerines like Paddyfield Pipit\, Ashy Prinia\, and Plain Prinia thrive along the grass-fringed bunds\, while White-breasted Waterhen and Purple Swamphen are frequently seen in the marshy interiors. \n \n \n \n However\, the ecological integrity of Meyyur Lake faces growing threats from urban expansion\, encroachment\, and pollution due to agricultural runoff and household waste from nearby villages. Seasonal drying from overextraction of water for irrigation further reduces wetland depth\, affecting nesting and feeding habitats for waders and ducks. Conservation efforts need to prioritize wetland restoration\, catchment protection\, and community-based monitoring. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Partnered with \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Bird Guide: Karthik VarunKarthik is an Advocate by profession and passionate wildlife photographer focusing on bird photography. Its mosaic of habitats — open water\, reed beds\, mudflats\, and agricultural fringes — supports a rich assemblage of both resident and migratory species. The lake teems with Red-wattled Lapwings\, Black-winged Stilts\, Indian Spot-billed Ducks\, and Lesser Whistling-Ducks\, which are commonly seen feeding and nesting along the shallow zones. Cormorants\, herons\, and egrets such as Little Cormorant\, Purple Heron\, and Eastern Cattle Egret frequent the lake edges\, while large waders like Painted Stork\, Asian Openbill\, and Glossy Ibis utilize it as a feeding ground during the post-monsoon months. The surrounding grasslands and scrub areas provide shelter for Ashy Prinia\, Plain Prinia\, Baya Weaver\, and Yellow-billed Babbler\, which are characteristic of Tamil Nadu’s semi-urban wetlands.\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Red-wattled Lapwing \n \n \n \n Black-winged Stilt \n \n \n \n Little Cormorant \n \n \n \n Indian Pond Heron \n \n \n \n Eastern Cattle Egret \n \n \n \n Asian Green Bee-eater \n \n \n \n Black Drongo \n \n \n \n Common Myna \n \n \n \n Brahminy Starling \n \n \n \n Lesser Whistling Duck \n \n \n \n Baya Weaver \n \n \n \n Indian Spot-billed Duck \n \n \n \n Painted Stork \n \n \n \n Blue-tailed Bee-eater \n \n \n \n Ashy Prinia \n \n \n \n Grey Francolin \n \n \n \n Purple Heron \n \n \n \n Indian Golden Oriole \n \n \n \n Rose-ringed Parakeet \n \n \n \n Yellow-billed Babbler \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Summary of Walk \n \n \n \n The much-awaited bird walk at Meyyur Lake\, originally postponed for two weeks due to cyclone impacts\, finally took place with undiminished enthusiasm and passion for birdwatching. Nine participants joined Karthik for this refreshing session\, exploring the lake’s vibrant wetlands and surrounding grasslands. The group recorded over 45 bird species\, with exciting sightings of the Whiskered Tern\, Black-capped Kingfisher\, White-rumped Munia\, Jerdon’s Bushlark\, Snipe\, Blue-tailed Bee-eater\, Jacobin Cuckoo\, Grey Francolin\, and Baya Weaver. \n \n \n \n The walk was marked by a wonderful spirit of collaboration\, as participants shared their knowledge and helped one another identify birds. The Ataavi app proved to be a valuable companion\, used for identifying species through photos and bird calls. Karthik enriched the experience with fascinating bird stories and insights into their behaviors\, making the session both educational and inspiring. Despite the weather delays\, the group’s passion for birdwatching shone through\, turning the day into a celebration of nature and community learning. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Number of Participants \n \n 0

Surrounding areas include paddy fields\, grazing lands\, and small patches of scrub vegetation\, together creating a mosaic of habitats ideal for both resident and migratory birds. Common birds visiting the lake are Spot-billed Pelican\, Painted Stork\, Asian Openbill\, Purple Heron\, Pheasant-tailed Jacana\, Black-winged Stilt\, Little Cormorant\, Common Coot\, Whiskered Tern\, and Garganey during the winter months. Smaller passerines like Paddyfield Pipit\, Ashy Prinia\, and Plain Prinia thrive along the grass-fringed bunds\, while White-breasted Waterhen and Purple Swamphen are frequently seen in the marshy interiors. \n \n \n \n However\, the ecological integrity of Meyyur Lake faces growing threats from urban expansion\, encroachment\, and pollution due to agricultural runoff and household waste from nearby villages. Seasonal drying from overextraction of water for irrigation further reduces wetland depth\, affecting nesting and feeding habitats for waders and ducks. Conservation efforts need to prioritize wetland restoration\, catchment protection\, and community-based monitoring. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Partnered with \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Bird Guide: Karthik VarunKarthik is an Advocate by profession and passionate wildlife photographer focusing on bird photography. Its mosaic of habitats — open water\, reed beds\, mudflats\, and agricultural fringes — supports a rich assemblage of both resident and migratory species. The lake teems with Red-wattled Lapwings\, Black-winged Stilts\, Indian Spot-billed Ducks\, and Lesser Whistling-Ducks\, which are commonly seen feeding and nesting along the shallow zones. Cormorants\, herons\, and egrets such as Little Cormorant\, Purple Heron\, and Eastern Cattle Egret frequent the lake edges\, while large waders like Painted Stork\, Asian Openbill\, and Glossy Ibis utilize it as a feeding ground during the post-monsoon months. The surrounding grasslands and scrub areas provide shelter for Ashy Prinia\, Plain Prinia\, Baya Weaver\, and Yellow-billed Babbler\, which are characteristic of Tamil Nadu’s semi-urban wetlands.\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Red-wattled Lapwing \n \n \n \n Black-winged Stilt \n \n \n \n Little Cormorant \n \n \n \n Indian Pond Heron \n \n \n \n Eastern Cattle Egret \n \n \n \n Asian Green Bee-eater \n \n \n \n Black Drongo \n \n \n \n Common Myna \n \n \n \n Brahminy Starling \n \n \n \n Lesser Whistling Duck \n \n \n \n Baya Weaver \n \n \n \n Indian Spot-billed Duck \n \n \n \n Painted Stork \n \n \n \n Blue-tailed Bee-eater \n \n \n \n Ashy Prinia \n \n \n \n Grey Francolin \n \n \n \n Purple Heron \n \n \n \n Indian Golden Oriole \n \n \n \n Rose-ringed Parakeet \n \n \n \n Yellow-billed Babbler \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Summary of Walk \n \n \n \n The much-awaited bird walk at Meyyur Lake\, originally postponed for two weeks due to cyclone impacts\, finally took place with undiminished enthusiasm and passion for birdwatching. SUMMARY:Bird Walk at Astha Kunj Park\, New Delhi
DESCRIPTION:Bird Walk at Meyyur Lake area in Nemam\, Thiruvallur \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Thiruvallur\n \n \n \n \n 26 October\, 2025\n \n \n \n \n Karthik Varun\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About Meyyur Lake \n \n \n \n Meyyur Lake\, located near Nemam in Thiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu\, is a large freshwater wetland spread across roughly 150–200 hectares\, depending on seasonal inflow. The lake is fed by monsoon rains and local catchment streams\, forming a shallow basin with extensive reed beds\, mudflats\, and open water zones. Surrounding areas include paddy fields\, grazing lands\, and small patches of scrub vegetation\, together creating a mosaic of habitats ideal for both resident and migratory birds. Common birds visiting the lake are Spot-billed Pelican\, Painted Stork\, Asian Openbill\, Purple Heron\, Pheasant-tailed Jacana\, Black-winged Stilt\, Little Cormorant\, Common Coot\, Whiskered Tern\, and Garganey during the winter months. Smaller passerines like Paddyfield Pipit\, Ashy Prinia\, and Plain Prinia thrive along the grass-fringed bunds\, while White-breasted Waterhen and Purple Swamphen are frequently seen in the marshy interiors. \n \n \n \n However\, the ecological integrity of Meyyur Lake faces growing threats from urban expansion\, encroachment\, and pollution due to agricultural runoff and household waste from nearby villages. Seasonal drying from overextraction of water for irrigation further reduces wetland depth\, affecting nesting and feeding habitats for waders and ducks. Conservation efforts need to prioritize wetland restoration\, catchment protection\, and community-based monitoring. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Partnered with \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Bird Guide: Karthik VarunKarthik is an Advocate by profession and passionate wildlife photographer focusing on bird photography. Its mosaic of habitats — open water\, reed beds\, mudflats\, and agricultural fringes — supports a rich assemblage of both resident and migratory species. The lake teems with Red-wattled Lapwings\, Black-winged Stilts\, Indian Spot-billed Ducks\, and Lesser Whistling-Ducks\, which are commonly seen feeding and nesting along the shallow zones. Cormorants\, herons\, and egrets such as Little Cormorant\, Purple Heron\, and Eastern Cattle Egret frequent the lake edges\, while large waders like Painted Stork\, Asian Openbill\, and Glossy Ibis utilize it as a feeding ground during the post-monsoon months. The surrounding grasslands and scrub areas provide shelter for Ashy Prinia\, Plain Prinia\, Baya Weaver\, and Yellow-billed Babbler\, which are characteristic of Tamil Nadu’s semi-urban wetlands.\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Red-wattled Lapwing \n \n \n \n Black-winged Stilt \n \n \n \n Little Cormorant \n \n \n \n Indian Pond Heron \n \n \n \n Eastern Cattle Egret \n \n \n \n Asian Green Bee-eater \n \n \n \n Black Drongo \n \n \n \n Common Myna \n \n \n \n Brahminy Starling \n \n \n \n Lesser Whistling Duck \n \n \n \n Baya Weaver \n \n \n \n Indian Spot-billed Duck \n \n \n \n Painted Stork \n \n \n \n Blue-tailed Bee-eater \n \n \n \n Ashy Prinia \n \n \n \n Grey Francolin \n \n \n \n Purple Heron \n \n \n \n Indian Golden Oriole \n \n \n \n Rose-ringed Parakeet \n \n \n \n Yellow-billed Babbler \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Summary of Walk \n \n \n \n The much-awaited bird walk at Meyyur Lake\, originally postponed for two weeks due to cyclone impacts\, finally took place with undiminished enthusiasm and passion for birdwatching.
